Base Ten - Place Value System

Our number system is an example of a place value system. This means that the value of a digit is determined by it's location in a number. For example, the number 2 in 203 shows two one-hundreds, or 200. While the 2 in 320 shows two tens, or 20. The number system is a base-ten system, meaning with each place you move to the left the value increases ten times larger.
